If you’ve been deep in the world of wedding planning (welcome, by the way!), you’ve probably stumbled across the phrase “golden hour” more than once - especially if you've chatted with your wedding photographer. And if you’ve ever found yourself wondering what on earth it actually is - and why us photographers bang on about it so much - this one’s for you.

As someone who’s been photographing weddings across the UK (and beyond!) for decades, I can confidently tell you that there really is no time more magical than golden hour when it comes to capturing those truly romantic, ethereal wedding portraits. Whether you're dreaming of soft, glowing light kissing your skin or you're just trying to figure out when to schedule your couple photos on the big day, I’ve got you covered.

Let’s dive into what makes this fleeting moment so special - and why you definitely want to carve out time for it on your wedding day timeline.

So, What Exactly Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour refers to the short window of time just after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun sits low in the sky and casts the softest, dreamiest light you’ve ever seen.

It’s a warm, glowing light that flatters skin tones, creates long, romantic shadows, and brings a magical touch to every image - like nature’s own Instagram filter (but way better and 100% real).

Why It’s Called “Golden Hour”

Because of the golden tones the sun gives off during this period - especially noticeable when it’s close to the horizon. It’s the polar opposite of the harsh overhead sunlight you get in the middle of the day, which can create unflattering shadows under eyes and noses.

And just to clarify - it’s not always literally an hour long. Depending on the season and your location in the UK, it can be anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. Timing is key!

Of course, some luck with the British weather on your wedding day is also required!

Why Golden Hour Is a Wedding Photographer’s Dream

1. Flattering Light for Skin Tones

This one’s a biggie. The diffused light during golden hour softens features, minimises harsh shadows, and gives everyone that lovely, romantic glow. It’s perfect for close-ups, couple shots and all the candid moments in between.

2. Creates Romantic Atmosphere

Golden hour is where the magic happens. The low-angle sun backlights hair, dances through veils, and adds a natural warmth that just screams romance. Honestly, if I could bottle that glow, I would.

3. Backdrop Drama

Golden light plays beautifully with landscapes, architecture and even urban settings. Whether we’re on a windswept Welsh coastline, in the middle of a meadow, or wandering a historic castle courtyard, golden hour gives depth, drama and that “wow” factor to every scene.

4. A Natural Pause for the Two of You

Stealing away for golden hour portraits gives couples a much-needed breather during the day. You’ll have just 15-20 quiet minutes together to soak up that just-married feeling - while I discreetly capture all the feels in the background. Honestly, it’s one of my favourite moments to witness.

What Time Is Golden Hour in the UK?

Here’s a rough guide to golden hour timings in the UK (though always check exact times using a weather app or The Photographer’s Ephemeris - yes, that’s a thing):

Top Tip: Consider your wedding month and location when planning your timeline. In summer, you might need to schedule golden hour portraits later in the evening, after your meal and speeches!

Planning Golden Hour Into Your Wedding Day Timeline

Here’s the thing - golden hour doesn’t magically work its way into your wedding photos unless we plan for it. If you want those golden, glowing, drop-dead-gorgeous portraits, we need to look at your wedding photography timeline and pencil in time for them.

When Should You Do Golden Hour Portraits?

Usually, these happen right after dinner or speeches (or between courses if you're happy to sneak away for a short window). I always scope the light on the day and give couples a gentle nudge when it's time - think of me as your golden hour hype-man!

Worried About Missing It?

Don’t stress! Here’s how we make sure you don’t miss that precious window:

  • Timeline Flexibility: I always build buffer time in your schedule just in case.

  • Back-Up Plans: If the weather doesn’t play ball, we’ll work with the light we’ve got - and I always have a few creative tricks up my sleeve.

  • Communication: I’ll keep you posted on the light on the day - no guesswork needed from you.

Golden Hour Wedding Photos: Real Examples

I’ve seen couples glow in golden hour light - quite literally.

Here are a few real-life examples of how it transforms the vibe:

  • A castle courtyard turned into a sun-drenched fairy-tale scene.

  • A quiet beach elopement where the sun set over the sea, casting a peachy glow over the tide.

  • An urban rooftop where golden hour light bounced off buildings for a fashion-forward, editorial vibe.

The point is: whether you’re in a grand venue or a quiet countryside setting, golden hour can elevate the entire feel of your wedding gallery.

What If the Weather Isn’t Great?

Ah, the age-old UK wedding question. The reality? Golden hour can still work beautifully even on a cloudy day. The sun might not burst through dramatically, but that soft, diffused light still flatters skin and creates a romantic, atmospheric tone.

As a photographer who’s worked in all conditions - from blazing sun to full-on drizzle - I can promise you: it’s not about chasing perfection. It’s about creating authentic, timeless images in whatever light we’re given.

Should You Prioritise Golden Hour in Your Photography?

In a word: absolutely.

If capturing warm, romantic, glowy images is important to you - and you want those portraits that feel like they belong in a magazine or hanging on the wall forever - then yes, golden hour is 100% worth prioritising.

It’s a small part of your day that delivers a huge return when it comes to your final wedding gallery. I’ll help you make the most of it, guide you gently through it, and capture the absolute best of you in the most magical light of the day.
