Let’s face it - in today’s digital-first world, your LinkedIn headshot is often your first impression. Before anyone reads your headline or clicks your portfolio, they’re seeing your photo. And that image can speak volumes about your professionalism, personality, and approachability.

But here’s the problem: so many LinkedIn profile photos look… well, lifeless. Bland. Overly corporate. They’re often taken under harsh studio lights against a blank or boring backdrop with zero expression and no individuality.

That’s where my approach comes in - and where you get the chance to truly stand out.

Why a Great LinkedIn Headshot Matters

LinkedIn isn’t just a digital CV - it’s a platform for networking, branding, and opportunity.

A great headshot:

  • Builds trust before a word is even spoken

  • Shows you’re serious and professional

  • Makes you memorable in a sea of sameness

Studies show that LinkedIn profiles with a professional headshot get 21 times more profile views and 36 times more messages. So this isn’t just about looking good - it’s about creating career opportunities.

Natural Light Photography for LinkedIn - My Preferred Approach

Now I’ll say this straight up - I'm usually less enthusiastic about standard studio shoots. I’m not interested in churning out the same lifeless photo you’ve seen a hundred times before. My preferred style is all about using natural light and shooting on location - whether that’s outdoors, in an urban setting, or in an environment that complements your industry or personal brand.

Why? Because it’s more relatable, modern and real.

You’re not a cardboard cut-out in a cubicle. You’re a dynamic professional with a personality - and your headshots should show that. Whether you're a creative freelancer, a business coach, a tech leader, or a job seeker rebranding yourself, I help craft a headshot that feels authentic and individual.

What to Wear for a LinkedIn Headshot

Wondering what you should wear for a headshot photo shoot is one of the most common questions I get. And the answer depends on who you are, what you do, and who you’re trying to connect with.

That said, here are some general tips that work for almost everyone:

Dress Like You Would at Work

If you’re a solicitor or corporate consultant, a well-fitted blazer might be your go-to. But if you’re a graphic designer or entrepreneur, a smart casual look with a bit of flair may suit better.

Avoid Distracting Patterns and Logos

Unless you're super extrovert in a highly creative industry it's probably best to just keep it simple. Solid colours work best, especially blues, greens, and neutral tones. Avoid anything too loud or logo-heavy - we want you to stand out, not your jumper.

Think About Layering

Blazers, jackets, or open shirts can add visual interest without being distracting. They also give structure to your shape, which works brilliantly in natural light.

Grooming and Makeup

It’s not about being ‘done up’ - it’s about looking like your best self. If you wear makeup daily, apply it how you normally would - or to the point where you feel at your best and most confident. Facial hair should be neatly trimmed. Most importantly - be comfortable.

The Perfect Poses for LinkedIn Headshots

No one wants to look stiff or staged. The goal is to come across as confident, approachable, and natural - and that’s where experience and gentle guidance make all the difference.

For those inexperienced in front of the camera, some of my go-to posing advice includes:

  1. Angle Your Body Slightly

Turn your shoulders slightly away from the camera (just a touch), rather than facing it dead-on. It adds dimension and helps the shot feel more relaxed.

  1. Keep Your Eyes Engaged

Look directly into the lens with energy - not intensity. It’s about looking focused and open, not like you’re about to interrogate someone.

  1. Smile - But Keep It Genuine

Forget cheesy grins or poker faces. I always work to create an atmosphere where you can relax into a natural expression - the kind that feels like you on a good day, talking to someone you like.

  1. Use the Environment

With natural light, we can use a wall, steps, railings, or even greenery to help you pose naturally. Sitting on a low bench, leaning gently against a wall, walking slowly while we shoot - these movements bring life to your headshot.

Best Locations for a LinkedIn Headshot

This is where my approach really shines. It allows us to carefully choose locations that suit your industry, brand, and personality.

A few real-world examples:

  • Creative Agencies - A colourful mural, quirky co-working space, or street-level office with great natural texture

  • Lawyers & Consultants - Clean, modern architecture in a business district or smart glass-fronted buildings

  • Health & Wellness Coaches - Green outdoor spaces, soft lighting near trees, or minimalist interiors with natural tones

  • Tech Professionals - Urban corners with subtle, neutral tones that give a modern and professional vibe

The bonus of headshot location shoots is that we’re not confined to artificial or plain backgrounds. We can shoot several looks in one session - giving you options for your website, social media, email signature, speaker profiles and more.

Time of Day - Why It Matters

One of the most underrated parts of a great headshot is timing. Having to time a headshot shoot for the best results could be seen as a negative but I see it as a positive because when you do time it right with suitable weather and the natural light it can add so much to a headshot photograph - something that a studio lighting set up simply can't mimic well enough.

The best natural light tends to happen during:

  • Early mornings (calm, soft, golden)

  • Late afternoons/early evenings (warm, flattering, less harsh)

Midday sun? It’s harsh, creates unflattering shadows, and makes people squint. So I always advise booking your shoot for when the light is working with us, not against us.

How to Prepare for Your LinkedIn Headshot Session

You don’t need to be a model. You just need to show up as you, and I’ll take care of the rest.

But a few quick tips to get the most out of it:

  • Get a good night’s sleep - tired eyes show

  • Drink plenty of water - it really helps skin clarity

  • Plan your outfit(s) in advance - try them on, iron them, and bring options

  • Trust the process - I’ll guide you the whole way through
