My personal favourite is natural light - on a clear enough day I’ll often making use of a soft setting sun in the late afternoon as a backlight for my portraiture shots. It takes a whole lot of practice to balance exposure and focus, but when you nail a backlit shot from a low sun you capture a soft ethereal feel within the shot that I love.
Composition Techniques for Impactful Portraits

With that said, everything is subjective, so I always find it both exciting and beneficial to regularly step away from my comfort zone and push the boundaries of all those “key” rules I mentioned above.

To achieve this, it's important to communicate with your subject, create a relaxed atmosphere, and capture candid moments.
Be patient and take the time to get to know your subject and capture their true character.
At first, natural portrait photographers are snap-happy in hopes of securing one winning shot from a series of hundreds, but with this method you’ll find yourself constantly drowning in hours of post-production work.
You want to get to the point where your intuition regularly tells you a keeper is a second or so away.
Creating a Connection with Your Subject

Take the time to get to know them, build rapport, and put them at ease.
Discuss exactly what you’re hoping to achieve from this particular shoot as this will help them to feel more comfortable and natural in front of the camera and enable you to capture their personality and emotions more effectively.
If I’m shooting with an inexperienced model, I’ll use the first quarter of a shoot to warm up - I would then expect to typically get the best results from the second half of the shoot.
Post-Processing for Impactful Portraits
Post-processing is the final step in creating impactful portraits.
By editing your images to your own style, you can enhance the mood, adjust the exposure, and make the subject stand out.
However, I would personally suggest it's important to keep your portraiture editing subtle and natural, as overly edited images can lose their authenticity and impact.
The days of shooting with film for both personal and commercial purposes are now extremely few and far between, but I for one love the unmistakable classic aesthetic quality that is achieved with film photography and take great inspiration from that when editing digital files.
