Are you considering booking your first portrait photography session but feeling unsure about what to expect? Don’t worry - I’ve got you covered!
If you're worried about not knowing how to pose, unsure about what to wear, nervous about what to expect from a portrait shoot - don’t worry - this guide is here to ease your mind.
As a professional portrait photographer based in Cardiff and serving South Wales and beyond, I’ve guided countless clients through their first sessions, and it’s my job to make the process as easy and enjoyable as possible.
In this article, I’ll walk you through every step, from our initial consultation to receiving your final stunning portraits.
Table of Contents
Step 1: The Initial Consultation
Before the camera comes out, we’ll start with a friendly chat.
Whether it’s over the phone, via email, or in person, the goal is to:
Understand Your Vision:Â What style are you looking for? Do you want something formal, casual, creative, or candid?
Discuss Location Options:Â We can shoot at any outdoor or indoor location (permission sometimes required), a studio, your home, or anywhere that may be meaningful to you.
Plan Wardrobe and Styling: I’ll provide tips on what to wear (spoiler: comfortable, well-coordinated outfits that reflect your personality work best).
Address Any Concerns: Nervous about posing? Don’t be! I’ll guide you every step of the way. (or check out my how to pose like a pro article beforehand).
This consultation ensures we’re aligned and sets the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable session.
Step 2: The Day of the Session
On the day of your portrait session, you can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Here’s how it typically unfolds:
Arrival and Setup: Wherever you choose for the shoot to take place, we’ll take a few minutes to scope out the spot and opportunities and get everything ready.
Getting Comfortable: I’ll help ease any nerves by chatting and setting a relaxed mood. If you’re bringing children or friends along (either for support or as part of the shoot), I’ll engage with them to make sure they’re happy and comfortable.
Guided Posing: Don’t worry about knowing how to pose - that’s my job! I’m happy to offer clear, easy-to-follow instructions to highlight your best angles and capture your authentic self - although I'm also happy to offer more gentle guidance so that you feel natural and in control if that's what you prefer. The important part is to make you as relaxed and comfortable as possible.
Capturing Candids: Some of the best portraits happen in those in-between moments - a laugh, a glance, or a natural expression. I’ll be ready to capture these fleeting, magical instances.
Outfit Changes: If we’ve planned for multiple looks, we’ll take time for quick outfit changes to add variety to your gallery.
Sessions typically last 1-2 hours, depending on your package and the type of portraits we’re capturing.
Remember, this isn’t just about the photos - it’s about capturing your essence and having fun along the way.
Step 3: After the Session
Once the session wraps up, my work continues behind the scenes.
Here’s what you can expect:
Image Selection and Editing:Â I carefully review all the photos, culling (deleting) any duplicates or images that I'm simply not happy with (lack of focus etc.) and keeping the rest for editing. Each image is professionally retouched to ensure you look your absolute best while maintaining a natural and authentic feel.
Gallery Delivery: Within a couple of weeks, you’ll receive a private, password-protected online gallery. This allows you to view your photos at your convenience, share them with family and friends, and select your favourites for printing. All images are supplied to you in both colour and black and white copies as high-resolution downloadable files.
Prints and Products: If you’d like, I can assist with creating high-quality prints, albums, or wall art to showcase your portraits beautifully - or you're welcome to do so yourself with the files.
Make sure to back up your high-resolution files so they’re safe for years to come!
The Power of Portraits
Portraits aren’t just pictures - they're a celebration of who you are. They capture fleeting moments, your unique story, and the relationships that matter most.
Imagine looking back on these photos years from now. They’ll remind you of this chapter of your life - your style, your smile, and your personality as it is today. That’s why a portrait session is more than just a photoshoot; it’s an investment in memories that grow more precious with time.
Whether you’re marking a milestone, embracing a new season of life, or simply treating yourself, portraits are a way to honour yourself and the people you love. It's an opportunity for us to create something beautiful together, something that will make you and others smile every time you see it. Something that grows more pertinent as time goes by.
In fact, a portrait session often becomes a family heirloom, cherished by future grandchildren decades later. Just think of how fondly you look at old photographs of your parents, grandparents and late ancestors.

FAQs About Your First Portrait Session
1. What Should I Wear to My Portrait Session?
Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Solid colours often work best, as they keep the focus on you rather than your clothes. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or distracting designs. Soft, neutral tones or rich, complementary colours usually photograph well. If you’re still unsure, we can discuss wardrobe options during your consultation to ensure your outfit choices reflect your personality and the session’s theme.
2. How Long Does a Portrait Session Last?
Most portrait sessions last between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the package and type of photos being taken. This provides ample time for outfit changes, location adjustments, and capturing a variety of poses without feeling rushed.
3. Do You Provide Hair and Makeup Services?
While I don’t provide these services directly, I can recommend trusted professionals in the area who specialise in natural, camera-ready looks. Whether you choose professional styling or prefer a DIY approach, the key is to highlight your features without overdoing it.
4. Can I Bring Someone With Me to the Session?
Absolutely! Bringing a friend or family member can help you feel more comfortable. They can also assist with wardrobe adjustments, hold props, or provide support if you’re feeling nervous.
5. Can I Include My Pet in the Photos?
Yes, pets are welcome! They’re a part of your family, and including them can add a personal and heart-warming touch to your portraits. Just let me know in advance so we can plan for their comfort during the session.
6. What Happens If I’m Feeling Nervous?
Feeling nervous is completely normal, especially if it’s your first session. I’ll guide you through poses and help create a relaxed environment. We’ll start with simple shots to ease you in, and soon enough, you’ll feel like a natural in front of the camera - or worst case scenario, realise that it's nowhere near as bad as you first thought it would be!
7. How Do I Choose a Location for My Portraits?
Think about places that hold meaning for you or reflect the style you want. Whether it’s a serene park, an urban backdrop, a cosy indoor space, or your own home, the location sets the tone for your session. I’m happy to offer suggestions based on your vision.
8. What Should I Bring to the Session?
Aside from your outfits, bring items that might help during the shoot, such as a hairbrush, makeup for touch-ups, and any props you'd like to include. If you have multiple outfits, consider bringing them on hangers to keep them neat.
9. Will You Edit My Photos?
Yes, all selected images are professionally edited to enhance lighting, colours, and overall aesthetics. I also perform retouching to remove minor blemishes or distractions while maintaining a natural, authentic look (unless you request otherwise!).
10. Can I Request Specific Poses?
Absolutely! If you have specific poses or ideas in mind, let me know before or during the session. This is your time, and I want to capture your vision. I’m also happy to offer suggestions of course to ensure we highlight your best angles and expressions.
11. What If the Weather Is Bad on the Day of an Outdoor Session?
We’ll have a backup plan! If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we can reschedule or move to an indoor location. I’ll keep an eye on the forecast and stay in touch to ensure everything runs smoothly.
12. When Will I Receive My Photos?
You’ll receive your private online gallery within a couple of weeks after the session. I’ll notify you as soon as the images are ready for viewing, and you can download high-resolution files directly from the gallery.
13. Do You Offer Prints or Albums?
Yes, I offer high-quality prints, albums, and wall art to showcase your portraits beautifully. I can guide you through the options to create stunning keepsakes that suit your style and space.
14. Can I Reschedule My Session?
Life happens, and I understand that plans can change. If you need to reschedule, please let me know as soon as possible, ideally at least 48 hours in advance, so we can find a new date that works for both of us.
15. How Should I Prepare for My Session?
Get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated, and avoid trying new skincare or hair treatments right before the session. Choose outfits in advance, and arrive with clean, moisturised skin. Relax and trust the process - I’ll take care of the rest!
16. What If I Don’t Like Being Photographed?
Many people feel this way, but my goal is to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free. By focusing on natural interactions and candid moments, I’ll help you feel comfortable and confident.
17. Can I Bring Props?
Yes, props can add a unique and personal touch to your portraits. Whether it’s a musical instrument, a favourite book, or something meaningful to you, we can incorporate it creatively into the session.
18. Will You Help Me Pose?
Of course! You don’t need any prior experience in front of the camera. I’ll guide you step-by-step, offering suggestions that highlight your best angles while keeping you relaxed and comfortable.
19. Can You Accommodate Groups or Families?
Yes, I’m experienced in capturing group dynamics, whether it’s families, couples, or friends. We’ll work together to ensure everyone looks great and feels included in the session.
