As a travel photographer with a soft spot for sunsets (and good lighting in general), my visit to Paphos, Cyprus, was a match made in golden-hour heaven.

Armed with my camera, a handful of SD cards, and an overzealous love for warm hues, I set out to capture the magic of this coastal gem.

Spoiler alert: Paphos did not disappoint.

If you’re planning a trip to Paphos, love sunset photography, or are simply here to soak in some digital wanderlust, this guide has got you covered.

Why Paphos is a Photographer’s Dream

Paphos is a Mediterranean paradise known for its rich history, stunning coastline, and, as I discovered, sunsets that could make even the most seasoned photographers weak at the knees. From the ancient ruins of Kato Paphos to the serene waves lapping the rocky shoreline, this coastal city is brimming with photographic potential.

But let’s not kid ourselves - the real star of the show is the Paphos sunset. The way the sun dips below the horizon, casting its golden glow across the sea, is nothing short of spectacular.

The Magic of Sunset Photography in Paphos

Sunset photography is like nature’s gift to photographers. It’s that sweet spot where the lighting does most of the heavy lifting. In Paphos, it’s no different.

Here’s why this time of day steals the show:

1. Golden Hour Bliss

Paphos sunsets bathe the landscape in warm, soft light, perfect for creating dreamy, atmospheric images. The golden hour - roughly the hour before sunset - is ideal for capturing the textures of the rocky coast and the shimmering sea.

2. Vibrant Colours Over the Mediterranean

The transition from warm oranges to deep purples over the Mediterranean Sea creates a breathtaking gradient. It’s a palette straight out of a painter’s dream, and as a photographer, it’s like hitting the jackpot.

3. A Seascape Haven

Paphos is home to some of the most picturesque coastal spots in Cyprus. Whether it’s the iconic Paphos Harbour, the rugged Sea Caves, or the calm waters near Coral Bay, the ocean provides a dynamic canvas for sunset photography.

Tips for Capturing Stunning Sunsets in Paphos

Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or a smartphone snapper, these tips will help you make the most of Paphos’ sunsets:

1. Scout Your Spot Early

Popular spots like Paphos Harbour can get busy, so arrive early to secure your vantage point. Want something quieter? Head to the Sea Caves or the Tombs of the Kings for a more secluded experience.

2. Bring a Tripod

Even the steadiest hands can’t compete with the stability of a tripod, especially in low light. It’s a must-have for capturing sharp details during sunset.

3. Experiment with Angles

Don’t just stick to the classic horizon shot. Try shooting through foreground elements like plants, rocks, or even a stray seagull (if it cooperates).

4. Play with Exposure Settings

Manual mode is your best friend during sunset. Adjust your exposure to prevent overblowing the highlights while retaining the rich colours of the sky.

Why Sunset Photography in Paphos is a Must

Beyond its visual appeal, Paphos sunsets offer a chance to slow down and savor the moment. The golden hues, the gentle sea breeze, and the tranquil vibes create an experience that’s as therapeutic as it is photogenic.

Whether you’re an aspiring photographer or someone who just wants a great profile pic (I see you), Paphos during sunset is the place to be.
